Host is in the campground
from about Memorial Weekend to Labor Day Weekend.
It is probably that Smiling River will start taking
reservations in 2009. The USFS Deschutes is thinking that they would like a few
more campgrounds to be under the reservation system. This means that about 60%
of the campgrounds will be able to be reserved including some, but not all of
the river side sites. If you reserve a campsite while Hoodoo is still the
concessionaire, we will allow you to move to a better site if one is available.

Smiling River is one of the Metolius Campgrounds. These campgrounds differ from
their western Cascade counterparts in many ways, but one important way is that
the campsites are more heavily used during the midweek than other areas.
However, with ample campsites along the river, it is rare for all the sites to
be taken even on the busiest weekend. All sites are first-come first-served.
This is the third campground that you come to as you travel away from Camp
Sherman along the river.
For those of you who miss the
ability to take a shower or use the laundry or even need an RV dump these
amenities are available for a fee at Hoodoo's Black Butte RV and Motel (aka.
Camp Sherman RV Park). Black Butte RV Park is located next to the school as you
enter Camp Sherman. The host will be glad to help with questions about the
campgrounds as well. On crowded weekends he may have information about which
campgrounds still have sites available. Also an RV dump is available at the
Hoodoo Lodge from 9AM to 4PM.
The campground is open from May 16 to
October 6, 2008, weather
permitting. There are three vault toilets and a gravity fed water system.
