In case you haven't figured it out from reading other things in Hoodoo.com, I love being an Oregonian. Unfortunately many of us just don't realize how lucky we have it, because we haven't bothered to visit what is here. Why
go to Disney World when you haven't been to Crater Lake? Why go to Lake Powell when you haven't stayed at Waldo. Hoodoo manages some of the most beautiful areas in the world and they are right here in the mid Cascades. Waldo Lake is one of the three purest lakes in the world along with Crater Lake and Lake
Baikal in Siberia. Bring up your kayak or canoe and just paddle slowly around the lake. Diamond Peak offers a great back drop with its glistening snow and the thick firs
and pines give one the feeling of being a part of nature. To me that is what camping is about. North Waldo has large campsites that are very popular. People have appreciated the flush toilets, but
recently construction was done to replace them with composting toilets to avoid the build up of
nitrates in the soil. Although North Waldo is probably the most popular of the three Waldo campgrounds it is not nicer than the others. All three are equally great and you might find that Islet is a lot less crowded. Waldo is known for its mosquitoes in the early
season, but by late July or possibly earlier when the snow pack is low, campers start replacing the
mosquitoes. Normally Waldo is not ready by Memorial Day.
With 2 composting toilets and 5 vault toilets,
It
is possible that the water system will not be working until later. If so, the
fees drop to $10 without water. Often snows cover the water system until late in
June and it may be difficult to fix winter damage. We
expect to have everything done by the July 4 weekend.
