THE HORSE
CAMPGROUNDS are also listed under their
individual areas, but we thought this might be helpful to those of you
who are only looking for campsites that are set up with corrals for your
horses. The fee campgrounds all have water sources and normally four
corrals per campsite. The campgrounds do have areas for manure storage,
but please make sure that you haul your own manure to these storage
areas. The campground fees don't even cover the hauling charges. It
would make it hard on everyone if you did not clean up after your own
animals.
The
campgrounds have trails to ride leading from the campgrounds and heading
into the US Forest Service land. The campgrounds are away
from lakes or
rivers to prevent pollution, but they often have creeks running through
them so please be careful. The US Forest Service and Hoodoo are pleased
to be able to help you with these sites, but because of the expense
involved the more you can help out the lower our rates can stay.
Occasionally those without horses decide to stay in these campgrounds.
This is allowed but discouraged. Hoodoo manages over 1,000 campsites for
those without horses and there are plenty more that we do not manage.
But the horse campgrounds are not plentiful and at times are full. While
we do realize that non-horse campers may on occasion have reason to stay
in these sites, we hope you will be courteous to those who the sites
were meant for.
The
only horse campground that can be reserved is
Sheep Springs The
reservations are available through the National Reservations System. If
you would like to see more reservation opportunities please let us know
and we will include more campgrounds in the system. But please realize
that these reservations are made into a national system that we do not
control and costs an extra fee to make.
All the campgrounds
are in the Cascades. Big Meadow is on
the west side off Hwy 22 close to where it meets with Hwy 20.
Sheep Srings is in the Metolius Basin about 10
miles from Camp Sherman. This is probably our most popular of the horse
campgrounds. Graham Corral is next to Black
Butte Ranch. It has large sites and is easy to get to off Hwy 20 on the
southeast side of the BBR main gate. Go past the entrance about five
miles heading toward Sisters and turn right on the Cold Springs Road.
Whispering Pines is our most secluded
campground and often the least used which might make it the best since
you will often be alone except for the visits from our camp host. It is
off Hwy 242 about five miles northwest of Sisters.
