Why Camp Here
Just west of Trout Lake is Atkisson Snopark area which is a group camping area during the summer. Huckleberry picking is a big deal around this area. Atkisson is about at a 2,700 foot elevation which makes opening before Memorial Weekend difficult most years.
Good to Know
During the summer one of the best ways to travel from the Gorge to Highway 12 and Packwood is along Highway 141 and then onto FS Road 23 in the high lakes area along the west side of Mt. Adams. As you do so, about a third of the way up from the Gorge you will travel through the small but very pleasant town of Trout Lake. Late snow can sometimes put off the opening date until after Memorial Day, but we will always try to open by that weekend.
We expect to have a host in the Peterson campground from about Memorial Weekend to Labor Day Weekend. Otherwise an attendant will be in the campground two to four times per day.
RV use rating is 5 out of 5
Directions
From 1-5, go east on Highway 14 for 66 miles then continue north onto Highway 141 for 15 miles until you reach Forest Service Road 2400 about 5 miles south of the town of Trout Lake. At FS Road 2400 turn northwest and head approximately 4 miles to the campground.
