The Mt. Adams District is on the south side of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest and is quite a bit different looking than its northern neighboring district. In the north you will find areas of old growth timber while on the south most of the areas were cut at one point and this is more typical of a second growth forest. The campgrounds on Wind River Highway are perfect stops if you are visiting the Mt. St. Helens lookouts from the south. They are also good family campgrounds for hiking and just hanging out at the campsite. All of them are low elevation campgrounds and normally open earlier in the season. They are easy to reach from Portland or Vancouver for the last minute camping expedition on a bright weekend or midweek stay. Don’t worry about reservations on most days especially on any midweek day. Even if one of the campgrounds happens to be full there will normally be another one nearby with a vacancy unless you are there during Memorial Weekend or Labor Day Weekend. But during those times just come early. About half the sites cannot be reserved.
