Why Camp Here
La Wis Wis is a classic campground built when the Forest Service thought of the Mt. Rainier area in the same way that the National Parks thought of Yosemite. This area was the recreation foundation of the Forest Service in the beginning. This Forest was important enough to the Forest Service that it was named after Gifford Pinchot, the man who was responsible for the establishment of the Forest Service while he was the natural resource advisor to President Theodore Roosevelt. A plaque is near the day use area honoring Pinchot. This campground is the largest and closest to Mt. Rainier at least on the south side. It is located just before the turn off to go into the National Park.
Good to Know
Those visitors who are not used to be among the towering Douglas Firs and Red Cedars of a NW rain forest will be overwhelmed, but those large trees also make it very difficult for large vehicles to maneuver through the campgrounds. If you have an RV make sure that you walk around first to avoid going on a campground road where you would get angled between large trees. There are different loops. Large RVs are not a problem on the H Loop which is to the right as you come in and go past the day use area, but any campsites past the entry board are difficult to drive into for any vehicles longer than 24 feet except for the first few past the host sites. A good driver could get a 30 foot rig in, but it would be very hard. Vehicles with trailers will be easier but still difficult and near impossible if the trailer is more than 24 feet long. If you have a large RV or trailer and the H sites are full, the host may be able to help you for one night near the guard station. The campground is located on land that has probably been a camping area for someone for thousands of years at the base of Mt. Rainier and the confluence of the Ohanapecosh River, the Clear Fork of the Cowlitz River, and Purcell Creek. The camp road and the 115 site spurs are paved. A few of the sites are currently closed due to river washouts.
We expect to have a host in the campground from about Memorial Weekend to Labor Day Weekend. Otherwise an attendant will be in the campground two to four times per day.
RV use rating is a 3 out of 5
Most sites are hard to get to in an RV due to winding roads with large trees.
Site Description
The “H” sites are best for RVs and are in the Hatchery Loop area near the bottom. The “A” loop is above the picnic area, the “B” area is past the host sites and so on going up to the Coho Group camp which is surrounded by the “E” loop. North on this map is pointed toward Mt. Rainier while the Highway is on the south side.
