The map on the left shows the outline of the Forest. The Deschutes National Forest follows the summit of the Cascade Mountains from the Sisters Mountains to the southwest to Mt. The Deschutes National Forest is well-known for its myriad of recreational opportunities, both in the summer and winter. Hoodoo is fortunate to manage over 80 campgrounds from Crescent Lake in the south to Lake Billy Chinook in the North. The Deschutes is distinguished from its western side of the Cascade counterpart mostly by the sunshine which prevails for about 75% of the year (almost 100% of the time in the summer) and by its giant Ponderosa Pine trees.
The Deschutes mostly surrounds Bend, Oregon where its Forest Headquarters is located. The campgrounds begin to open as the snow melts in May and start to close when the snow of the upper elevations start to threaten in October. However, there are some campgrounds open year around on the Metolius River near Camp Sherman and Sisters where their lower elevation location normally means a lack of snow. In spring a few of the higher elevation campgrounds get plowed in April in order to open for the fishing season.
