Located at the top of Santiam Pass within view of Hoodoo Ski Bowl, Big
Lake Campground offers a high Cascade experience. The lakes altitude of about
4,600 feet sometimes means a late opening due to snow buildup in the winter. The
lake is pristine and offers great adventure to those who want to cross water
sports with high elevation adventures like hiking, sightseeing or exploring.
Although most of our campers like to kick back, the Big Lake area offers a
variety of trails for jogging (perfect elevation for the serious athlete),
hiking, and riding. One can still see the pioneer wagon trail at the north end
of the lake. Big Lake has been a popular stopping spot for many years. The best
spots are often taken, so come early on weekends and holidays, but there really
are few or no bad sites. This place is incredible in the fall when very few
others are around, but it is nice most of the time, except for the first few
weeks after the snow has melted when the mosquitoes take over, usually in late
June or early July. The area boasts a boat launch and picnic area, water
skiing, reservable sites and fishing. Four types of fish are stocked at
Big Lake twice during the summer; Brook, Cutthroat, Brown Trout and Kokannee.
The lake is up to 65 feet deep in places. ALSO SEE BIG LAKE WEST.
Normally the host is here from Memorial Day Weekend through at least the
Labor Day Weekend otherwise there will be an attendant who will be visiting the
campground two to four times per day.
