The Dalles
is about five miles from Silver Springs and another mile from the entry to the
Mt. Rainer National Park. Certainly the Redwoods of California are impressive,
but when you see a Douglas Fir that is as tall as a Redwood but about half the
diameter (around 10' across) it is impressive. The Dalles is in the middle of an
old growth Douglas Fir and Western Red Cedar forest. There is an interactive
trail in the campground, but in reality the whole campground is a spot that you
will remember. The forest in this campground will even impress those of you who
are from the Northwest and live around the towering Firs. This area is special.
There is a Day Use area with a shelter with a $5 fee. However, if you would like
to reserve the shelter for your group for the day, you may do so through the NRRS logo
or click on the site number #1 group site, below. The daily fee is $50 plus the reservation fee that is paid to the NRRS.
Summer of 2008 6/21-8/30. Each
Saturday around 11 AM someone from the Salmon Enhancement Group will be willing
to take interested individuals on a walk from the campground to nearby areas of
interest . (check with the host or at the
entry area for exact times.) This will give
you a chance to learn something about the effort to save the salmon habitat and
about the White River area is general. Campers or passers by are welcome to join
in on this informative and fun walk. Meet at the host site near the campground
entry. Walks are planned for The Dalles and Silver Springs campgrounds. If you
are just coming in for the day, please remember that there is a $5 per vehicle
day use fee.
Host is in the
campground from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend.
