This is the first campground
that you come to as you go up the Waldo Road. It is also the largest and if you
are lucky enough to camp in a "D" site, the nicest one too. All the campgrounds
have access to the 22 mile Waldo Lake Trail which is good for hikers and bikers.
An average rider will take about 4 hours to complete the trail. Like the others,
Shadow Bay has flush toilets (being phased out) and compost toilets available.
Most of the campsites are large and private although some are not. Most of the
time the B and C sites are available. Most of the campsites are good for RVers
and tenters alike, but watch the maximum vehicle length in the chart below to
help you decide. Like the others Shadow Bay also has a boat ramp and a swim
area. You should have a Northwest Forest Pass to use these areas if you are not
camping. In spite of rumors to the otherwise, Waldo does have fish, mostly trout
but some Kokanee Salmon also. The fishing is best in the first and last month of
the campground openings. On a typical day the lake is calm in the morning and
around dusk. During the day the winds often blow helping to keep away the
mosquitoes. When you use the area please try to clean the campsites and
surrounding area so that no one can tell you were there.
Shadow Bay has been changing over to all environmentally friendly compost
toilets and this process is about done. The campground will be open starting
around the first weekend in July to September 18, 2006 weather
permitting. Be prepared for the possibility of no water in the early season.
If water is not offered the fee drops to $10. Starting in 2005
GROUP
and INDIVIDUAL
campsites will be available by
reservations.
These are the only reservation sites on Waldo Lake. The
group sites are 17 sites in
the
C
Loop for $221, 19 sites in the
B Loop for $247and 5 sites
in the
E
Loop for $65. The
individual
reservation sites are in the
F
Loop.
The sites that are reservable are shown in red below.
The sites that are reservable as a
group are shown in green.
You will pay the NRRS a one time
per reservation fee of about $10 per individual site (in the F Loop) or per
group of sites if they are designated to be part of a group. (B, C, E
Loops). All sites are first come - first served if there are no reservations.
There is an extra
vehicle fee if you have over 1 vehicle per site or over 2 for the multisites or
over the number of sites in the group areas. (ex. you have paid for up to 19
vehicles if you have paid for the B Loop). This area is known for its mosquitoes
into late July. Tenting is not a good idea during mosquito season. While the
area is never mosquito free, it is much more pleasant during August and beyond
and/or before dusk.
