This area is popular in the winter as well as in the summer. It is a very popular cross country trail area with a shelter located near the lake for over night stays
(I've done that and got caught in a huge snow storm) and then in the summer it is a popular camping area especially for the fishermen. The campsites on the lake are superb. On the high lake campgrounds like at Waldo the campsites are away from the water in order to keep the lake in a more pristine condition. Camping right on a lower lake isn't quite as critical and so many of the sites are right at the water's edge. (However, please keep the campground clean and the lake unpolluted). To generalize the difference in campers. At Gold Lake I would expect to find fishermen in a boat, along with a six pack of beer. At Waldo I would expect to find canoes and kayaks with bottled water. (Even if the water from the faucet is better). I love the feel of Gold Lake when it is not so
