Bridge Construction Will Cause Road Detour in July and August - Detour Map

Sisters, Ore – From mid-July until early September, the Deschutes National Forest, Sisters Ranger District, will close a segment of Forest Road 12, which is located just south and east of Suttle Lake off of State Highway 20, and visitors will be detoured.

From July 15 to September 2, 2010 a short segment of Forest Road 12 over Lake Creek will be closed while contractors replace culverts with a bridge to improve fish passage in the creek.  The road accesses popular recreation areas near Round Lake, Jack Creek and Camp Sherman; however, only a small portion of the road will be closed and most of Forest Road 12 will remain open.  Recreation areas will still be accessible via a signed detour that will be in place throughout the closure.  Message boards on State Highway 20 will forewarn visitors of the closure and information will be posted in local communities and businesses and on Forest Service websites.

In discussing the road closure, Sisters District Ranger, Bill Anthony, said, “We know it is a popular road for visitors to the national forest during July and August.  Though we regret impacting our visitors, we must do the bridge project on Lake Creek in the summer.  During the spring and fall we must avoid impacts to trout and salmon spawning and rearing in the creek. Also during the spring, we need to avoid possible impacts to spotted owls during their nesting season.”

For more information please contact Kirk Flannigan or Don Walker at the Sisters Ranger District, 541-549-7700.
